This subject culminates in the development of a synthesised project proposal that can form the foundation for an incubator project. Issues relating to ethical research practices and approaches to potentially sensitive research matters are considered. Students develop and consolidate their understanding of various research practices in order to analyse and review quantitative and qualitative data. Proposals should seek to identify a well formulated research question and hypothesis based on this analysis. Students also undertake reflective analysis with creative and societal innovation founded on research as they develop their project proposal. At the end of this subject students will have proposed the foundations of a self-initiated project that exhibits a sophisticated understanding of contemporary practice based on triple line philosophy:

1. environmental sustainability;
2. social, ethics and creative responsibility combined with;
3. financial responsibility.

User Research introduces students to the tools and methodologies required for both user research and user experience research. Students will use various research methods such as surveys, interviews and observations to provide insights to user needs, behaviours and attitudes.

As part of their research students will define research objectives, recruit participants, create research protocols, analyse data, and report on their findings. This includes the use of personas and usability testing for greater insights and understanding of user needs and attitudes.

Students will consolidate and present their research findings to inform the future development of a UX design project.

The purpose of this subject is to provide a solid mathematical background that students will encounter in studies of Artificial Intelligence, specifically in sub-areas such as machine learning, natural language processing, speech recognition, and computer vision. This subject introduces the basics of deep learning and how to build neural networks. Students are presented with different methods and applications to different AI sub-areas such as natural language processing, speech recognition, and computer vision. This subject introduces designers to research methodologies as a basis for identifying problems which can be the catalyst to bring about change. Students gain skills in the analysis of research data using grounded theory and phenomenography, in addition to visual research methods used as a foundation for creative and design solutions inherent in cross-disciplinary creative practice.

By means of reflection, analysis and contextualising an identified culture—their own or others— and by drawing on its philosophies, typical behaviours and patterns, designers explore, elicit and assess problems to instigate creative group projects. The design practices foster understanding of, and connection with, the contexts that designed things participate in, enrich and often transform. The additional emphasis is on problem identification that informs and leads to enhanced futures based on successful creative outcomes.

Begin your journey into the public health industry with an introduction to the principles of public health and fundamentals of public health practice. You will consider the way major social determinants of health affect a population’s health outcomes, while examining the role of public health stakeholders in addressing health inequality and inequity. Learn about the theoretical and conceptual health intervention frameworks and apply these to different populations, including Indigenous and disadvantaged populations. This next subject in your journey into the public health industry focuses on the formulation of health policy. You will learn about policy development, implementation and sustainability within the complex health policy environment. In this subject, you will explore the concepts and processes of design thinking, including the origins of Design Thinking and its use across a range of disciplines and contexts. Following these general processes, you will then engage in a design thinking process to identify and address an issue within your own professional context. In this subject you will build upon your current self-understanding to develop your strategic and ethical leadership capability. You will explore your key formative experiences and self-image using the techniques of reflective research, psychometric assessment and support from a mentoring partner. Open Studio provides students the opportunity to pursue a significant project in a collaborative or professional environment. Students will develop skills in professional practice, team work and critical thinking that will enhance their prospects of gaining meaningful employment and build their career for the future.

By reflecting on current industry practice and future needs, students broaden their learning while studying in a ‘real world’ context as they work towards a design outcome or solution for their final project.

There are two project options available to students:

Option 1: Industry Brief

Students respond to criteria set within the context of an Industry Project. Research methodologies appropriate to professional design practice and the documentation of personal creative investigation will be applied. In addition, students will investigate and examine commercial opportunities through collaborative work practice.  Students draw upon the philosophical, practical, methodological, theoretical and technical tools they have gathered over the duration of their studies to successfully complete their project. The project is proposed as inter-disciplinary and draws on both specialised and common industry practices.

Option 2: Industry placement

This project offers students the opportunity to undertake a design industry placement in their chosen discipline. A workplace environment can enable long-term industry relationships to be established as students learn from people who may become employers, colleagues or mentors in the future. Students will undertake a series of industry-led tasks that are relevant to their design discipline in order to understand the fundamental concepts of working in or managing a professional design team. With emphasis on the operation of the environment, students enhance their communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a professional context.

The subject is delivered from a cross specialisation perspective and draws on both specialised and common industry practices.

The subject explores design leadership in driving success and innovation, regardless of the type of organisation you work in. It offers a comprehensive exploration of leadership in organisations, focusing on how design can drive innovation and change by navigating the complexity of our “faster future”. It provides an understanding of the role of design leaders in organisations, which skills and competences they might have to drive design-led innovation at the organizational strategic level. Students will learn and apply methodologies like systems thinking, strategic design, agile management, visual thinking and business modelling to navigate the complexity of organizational transformations.

Students will examine the concepts, principles, skills and capabilities required to lead design teams and design agendas to influence organisational wide transformation. Students will evaluate different leadership styles, reflect on their own style, and apply strategies used to influence positive and sustainable change. This will enhance their leadership capabilities and prepare for future leadership roles. Students develop critical skills in design leadership, teamworking, sustainable and creative change. The course culminates in a final Design Leadership Project, where students apply learned concepts to real-world challenges.

The Advanced Design Studio is a practice-based subject that provides the environment for students to develop a major design outcome. The project is based upon the platform of research work, preliminary concepts and proposal that have emerged throughout the Research and Innovation subject.  

Students will apply their knowledge of design practice and processes considering socio-cultural, ethical, technical, sustainable and economic issues to inform a responsible design outcome.  

An important aspect will be developing and iterating concepts to deliver a design prototype or outcome for evaluation and testing. This includes analysing the functional and aesthetic qualities for the design outcome that successfully addresses the students’ proposed brief.  

Design outcomes may encompass a digital or physical artefact, service design, spatial design, communication design or systems design in the students’ preferred design discipline.

Students will gain an understanding of common types of mental illness and the social and psychological determinants of mental health. Reduction of lethal risk and domestic abuse are key components of this subject. Common personality disorders will be outlined and explored.

Understanding digital culture and its impact upon intrapersonal, interpersonal, and intercultural experience in a globalised society is fundamental to therapeutic relationships. This subject examines the ways in which technology influences thinking and behaviour introducing phenomena such as disinhibition, net-worked relationships, multiple, contingent and mobile identities, dissociative imagination and behaviours, and the desire for liminal experience. Through a critical analysis of the impact of technology this subject assists students to utilise traditional face-to-face counselling theories and methods in digital environments, including apps, sms, videoconferencing, virtual reality as it applies to counselling. This subject provides students with the tools to create, and manage, a digitally competent ethical and professionally appropriate interpersonal online presence and strategies for managing client privacy and security. Current and future trends in social media and information communication technology and their impact on practice will also be considered.

This subject will introduce you to the role and purpose of accounting processes, systems and the regulatory and ethical frameworks. You will gain an understanding about processes for identifying, measuring, recording and communicating financial information thorough the financial reports of different business types, such as sole traders and companies. The double-entry accounting knowledge will be developed using both manual and computerised accounting systems. This subject will introduce the conceptual framework of accounting and the code of ethics for professional accountants which will set you up for success in later accounting subjects. You will study the full accounting cycle and apply it to key areas such as cash management, non-current assets, accounts receivables and payables.

This subject expands on foundational financial accounting concepts and practices, advancing your understanding of key competencies and contemporary trends in financial accounting. Enhance your understanding of the Australian regulatory and ethical environment for financial reporting, along with the purpose and interpretation of accounting standards (AASB) and its equivalent international Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). You will critique selected accounting standards in areas such as revenue, assets, and liabilities, and evaluate how these standards influence the preparation of General-Purpose Financial Statements (GPFS) of reporting entities. These learnings will be demonstrated in your ability to critically reflect on the importance of regulations to accounting practice through written and practical software-based assessments.

In this subject, you will critically assess the micro and macroeconomic context needed for making these decisions. You will critically assess the potential impact of regulatory and economy-wide changes to business environments, and will apply economic models to make decisions about the optimal allocation of business resources. This subject requires the student to undertake and document an original and new project that will be sponsored by and benefit the employer as well as demonstrably bridge the theoretical–praxis gap in the student’s knowledge. This course aims to introduce students to principles, practices and theories of working with groups in a therapeutic context. There are many different kinds of groups however, they are usually classified according to the kind of work that is being undertaken. Interpersonal groups target interpersonal relationships and social interactions. For clients with mental health challenges or people with disabilities, skills development groups are often made available. Groups are also formed on the basis of the approach to counselling - for example, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy groups. Connection to land, culture, spirituality, family and community are important elements of social and emotional wellbeing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples. In this subject students will critically analyse the social determinants of mental health and problems such as grief and loss, trauma, self-harm and suicidal ideation. Ethics and best practice in mental health provision will also be addressed. The link between identity, country, and mental health will be critically appraised. Students will engage in self-reflexive analysis of the impact of personal colonial history, bias, and beliefs, and examine the relational nature of storytelling in practice.

The effects of trauma are seen across spectrums of human experience. This subject explores trauma and the impact that traumatic experiences may have on a person. The neurobiology of trauma including the impact on the nervous system and polyvagal theory will be explored. The idea of an optimal window of tolerance for the autonomic nervous system and that adaptations may simultaneously be functional for survival and problematic for the individual will be explored. Research shows childhood adversity effects adult mental health . Students will learn about abuse, applying risk assessment tools and understand the impact of domestic abuse on family, friends and community.

Students will be required to demonstrate trauma informed practice whilst maintaining appropriate boundaries and adequate self-care.

In this subject students learn the skills and acquire the knowledge required to safely provide counselling for a suicidal person. The subject will cover definitions of suicide and serious self-harm, including risk factors for suicide with particular consideration of mental illness, domestic abuse and substance misuse. The biopsychosocial determinants of suicidality and serious self-harm, will be explored. The social impact of suicide, media reporting, and suicide prevention policy and practice will also be addressed. Students will learn the elements of crisis intervention as well as working with the recovery approach to suicidality, including the common factors that facilitate recovery, individual responsibility, acceptance, hope, identity, empowerment, and advocacy.
